The Community Adult learning program (CALP) helps Albertans with low literacy improve their lives



 Introduction
Alberta funds CALP to support organizations that offer part-time, non-formal learning opportunities that are close to where you live. CALP programs should support literacy and numeracy improvement or the improvement of language, digital or life skills.

Summary
1 in 5 adult Albertans face daily literacy and numeracy challenges
Literacy is not just about reading and writing.
Reading and writing are important, but literacy is about your ability to use those skills to help improve your life.
You need literacy skills to:
get and use information effectively make informed choices about:

  • work
  • health care
  • parenting
  • household finances
  • voting

Part-time classes can help you improve your literacy or other learning skills.


About CALP
Government funds CALP to support organizations that offer part-time, nonformal learning opportunities that are close to where you live.
CALP providers may be able to help you improve your:
literacy
numeracy
English language skills
basic digital skills
life skills

CALP offers safe and welcoming places to learn.
From 2017 to 2018, more than 17,000 people participated in community adult learning programs throughout Alberta.
